But what happened
to the Wild Dogs?
Zoos are not static. As in the wild, animals get born and animals die. In addition, animals may go out or come into the zoo on breeding loan to maximize genetic diversity. As numbers of a zoo population increase, the group may be moved into exhibit space formerly occupied by another species. Other animals may be moved temporarily off exhibit as exhibit space is renovated. Or a group of animals may be moved to another facility to make room for another that supports the zoo's conservation efforts or other aspects of its mission.
For these reasons you may find that some animals described at WhoZoo may no longer be seen at the Fort Worth Zoo. We will keep these species in the WhoZoo data base to serve as an informational resource, but will attempt to stay current in noting which animals are not on exhibit.
The following WhoZoo animals are not currently on exhibit at the Fort Worth Zoo:
- Prairie dogs (returning soon when the Texas Wild exhibit opens)
- Fruit bats
- African wild dogs
- Spider monkeys
- Grey kangaroos
- Scarlet Ibis
- Inca terns
- African Grey Parrot
- African Bullfrog
- Pacific Octopus
- Upside-down Jellyfish
- Red-kneed Tarantula
